just a bit closer...
Went to Summit and got a new primary fuel bowl and a carb rebuild kit. After figuring out some what everything was for, as the carb itself is an older model and the rebuild kit contained different spec'd parts, everything was put back together.
The motor ran. On its own. Sweet. But....no oil pressure. And the carb still leaks. The only place it leaks is the primary float needle. The style that was on the old bowl is a little different then the style that came with the kit. We reused the old needle, and it leaks. Leaks in such a-way that it really isn't fixable. Can't use a gasket. So, we'll probably end up getting the part we're missing to use the new needle (which I assume Holley expects you to reuse the old part...and since ours is a different design, we don't have that part), which should solve our leakage problem. Of course, plug one leak and three more pop up.
The oil pressure is an easier fix. You're supposed to install the oil pump driveshaft from the bottom side, and since it wasn't, it had to be dropped in from the top side. To do this, the end of the distributor got a nice coating of thick grease to old the rod into place, and the whole affair was put on the engine. I guess in doing so, the driveshaft didn't disengage from the distro and never engaged the oil pump....so no oil pressure. The fix was to make a slightly longer shaft. Buttoned everything back up, but since the timing was moved in removing the distro, the motor didn't just start up. The repeated attempts to breathe life into the thing ran the battery dead. Give it another go in the morning.
Got a new dog today. His name is Odie. He's a Miniature Schnauzer. Man, that dog is little. Cool little thing though. I guess my mom saw it and fell in love, so we adopted it. He and the cat don't really get along. Even though the cat is bigger then he is, the cat snipped at him, which of course the dog chased him and treed the cat. I had to get a ladder and fetch that damn'd cat from the tree. Damn cat.
Speaking of cats, check this out. Funny stuff. Cats are awesome.
