a milestone
Yesterday was truly a milestone for the '66. For the first time since we've had it, it moved under its own power. I was given then maiden voyage, and let me tell you, I was nervous as hell. I've never done a complete rebuild/build-up of a car like this, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. It was really, really cool though. At first, things didn't go so well, as we're low on transmission fluid and have a leak, so you've got to get the revs up to get the car moving...I just knew the transmission would suddenly engage and send me rocketing out the shop, and the brakes not want to work. Luckily, the exact opposite happened. The car eased out, and the brakes worked like a charm. It was nice to see the thing outside. I grabbed a few shots of it, but haven't got them online yet.
I also wrapped up a little pet project on the 240 yesterday as well, the wiring. As stated earlier, since I'm not gonna have HVAC or some other things, I don't need the wiring. It took a bit, but I think it was worth it. I've still got to get a casuality count, but I removed a bunch of useless wires. Just one step closer to RACECAR!

box o' wires
Box of wires! I've got a box of wires for sale! Fresh from the harness! Box of wires!
The past week or so I've been going through the wiring that's left over in the 240 to try to eliminate some of it. When I'm not gonna be running an HVAC system or an audio system, whats the point of keeping the wiring? So the laborious task of identifying all the harnesses, figuring out which ones I can get rid of, which ones I need to keep, and which ones I've no idea what the hell they do. If I were smart, I would've marked all the harnesses when I unplugged them, but I'm not. So I've had to stare at schematics and harness layout diagrams to identify everything. Then the fun task of unwrapping the harnesses and taking out the uneeded wires. My only fear is that I'll accidentally cut a wire or eliminate something I'll later need. I'm trying to prevent too big a fuck up by leaving enough wire to later tap into again. Even though the weight savings of doing such is minimal, the 'race car factor' went up a few notches.

danglies are tinglin'
Little things will make my day. And little makes my day more then race car bits and bobs. For about a week now I've been waiting on some draw latches to come in...finally they made it home. What are draw latches? They are the same latches found on toolboxes and such. Race cars use 'em to hold body panels on. They make for quick body panel removal and replacement. Since I'll be drifting, I predict some body panels will need to be replaced...so, latches it is. Not to mention it allows me to get rid of the stock bumper brackets, which are very heavy. Race car tech like these simple draw latches really makes me happy.
Something kinda cool and strange happened yesterday...some guy came to the door wanting to buy my truck. Yup, he wanted to buy my truck. That's kinda cool. I declined, as I'm not ready to get rid of it, and I don't think he would've given me enough money to make it worth my while...which would basically be enough money to buy the expensive parts for the 240 and enough to get another vehicle...something inexpensive, but not totally lame. Maybe like a 240 convert or something. Now, if had been flashing a fistful of bills or had checkbook in hand, we woulda talked, but...nah, just not ready to get rid of it just yet.
